Qualified as a solicitor in 1998

After reading law at Hull University and completing the Solicitors legal final exam at Chester Law School, I started my legal career a with a paralegal job at a niche sports law firm off Chancery Lane in 1995, in Holborn’s legal quarter.

Within a year I successfully applied for a training contract with a “Legal 500” City law firm.

I survived a hellish two year training contract and qualified as a solicitor in 1998.

Upskilled & Became A Solicitor-Advocate In 2013

I upskilled my legal qualifications in 2013 by passing the “Solicitor-Advocate (Higher Rights of Audience)” examinations. Consequently qualified to appear in court as counsel and represent clients in any English court, opposite any barrister, in front of any Judge.

Prior to this, as with all solicitors, I was limited to representing clients from the office and having to instruct separate counsel for court. My client at the time preferred the continuity of my legal service however, hence I upskilled to become a one-stop-shop of legal representation from the office to the court. It makes so much more sense. Rather like an attorney operates in America (instead of the standard two-tier system we have here in England & Great Britain where barristers and solicitors can end up being separate lawyers on one case).

Legal balance

During the infamous phone-hacking litigation I achieved a successful settlement on behalf of a claimant.

This is my greatest career highlight thus far as it reflects my belief in the need for a reasonable and fair balance between freedom of speech (Article 10 of the ECHR) and the need for privacy and confidentiality (Article 8 of the ECHR).
